Baobab Press seeks books that communicate and support their themes through new and well-articulated means. We like risk. We like invention. More importantly, we look for a quality of thought that adds depth to a writer's concerns. And although it is not an official requirement, we tend to select literary work with a strong sense of place at its core. Ultimately, our goal is to publish work that resonates in the  contemporary climate and that will continue to resonate in years to  come. We believe that that this goal and the goal of staying financially viable are one in the same.

Baobab is currently considering completed Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction, Novel, and Comic/Visual Narrative manuscripts. (Comic/Visual Narrative manuscripts will not be considered without artwork.)

Short-story manuscripts will re-open for consideration in March 2020.

Please let us  know in your cover letter if any part of your manuscript submission has been published in a previous format.  Simultaneous submissions are welcome and encouraged as long as authors inform us  immediately upon acceptance elsewhere.

In the first installment of This Side of the Divide Baobab Press, , in conjunction with the University of Nevada - Reno's MFA program in creative writing, searched out stories that contributed to a more inclusive understanding of the land and people located west of the Continental Divide. The result was This Side of the Divide: Stories of the American West.

For the second installment, This Side of the DIvide: New Myths of the American West we are in search of stories that reconstruct our beliefs about the past, present, and future of those people and places through the lens of myth. We have a special interest in those stories that “concern the history of a person/people, explain some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involve supernatural beings or events.”

In other words, we are looking for stories that explain the ineffable or confound the things we take for granted; we are looking for heroines, for tricksters, for demi-gods in all of their subtle glory; we want the universe-altering events contained in small actions, and the small events knocked slightly off schedule by destruction/creation of cataclysmic proportions. What we want is your interpretation of myth, set west of the continental divide, that deepens our understanding of this vast space and its people while tapping into the possibility contained in one of our oldest narrative conventions.

This Side of the Divide: New Myths of the American West is open to horror, sci-fi, fantasy, literary, magical realism, flash fiction, you name it, as long as it is your best prose under 7500 words, and it is set on or west of the Continental Divide. Baobab Press and the University of Nevada, Reno MFA celebrate all people, and we strongly encourage submissions from diverse and marginalized voices.

Stories previously published in journals will be considered as long as al rights have reverted to the author.

Please do not send anything that has previously appeared in another anthology or story collection.
